1. It’s good for you.
Cultivated for over 5,00 years, fonio is West Africa’s oldest grain. It’s naturally gluten-free, has a low glycemic index, and is light and fluffy – making it easy to digest. Fonio is also high in protein, iron, and fiber, and rich with essential amino acids that are deficient in most other grains.
2. It’s great for others.
We sustainably source our fonio from smallholder farms in rural West Africa. By creating a global marketplace for fonio, and turning it from a subsistence crop to a cash crop, we can transform communities across the West African Sahel. Our mission is to build healthier, more prosperous, and sustainable communities in one of the most vulnerable regions of the world.
3. It’s even better for the planet.
Fonio thrives in the dry, sandy soil of the West African Sahel, an area where very little else grows. Its deep roots allow fonio to grow with very little water, and drought resistant properties help combat desertification for communities that are prone to drought and famine. Ultimately, we are creating a resilient agriculture system to cultivate healthier soil and ensure sustainable production of fonio.
4. Super easy to cook.
In Mali, they joke that fonio never embarrasses the cook – it’s that easy to make. Just add hot water, cover, and 5-minutes later you have a fluffy bowl of fonio.
Fonio substitutes for any of your favorite rice or quinoa dishes. If you need some inspiration, here are a few from our Co-Founder, chef Pierre Thiam!
5. Highest quality fonio.
We spent two years creating a sustainable supply chain that wins for all of our stakeholders. We offer the only pre-cooked and pre-washed fonio available to guarantee quick, fluffy results!
